When an AI agent fails, teams often respond by changing the prompt or selecting a stronger model. Sometimes that helps. Frequently the deeper problem is the system around the model.
Reliable agents require a harness.
Capability is not reliability
A model may be capable of planning, writing code or interpreting documents. Reliability asks a different question: can the system produce acceptable behavior repeatedly under real operating conditions?
That depends on more than intelligence.
The reliability stack
A practical agent system needs:
- bounded tools,
- explicit permissions,
- versioned instructions,
- deterministic checks,
- observable state,
- and recovery paths.
The model should not be asked to improvise what the surrounding system can verify directly.
Deterministic where possible
Use the model for judgment under ambiguity. Use code for things that must be exact.
Schema validation, access control, arithmetic, file existence and policy checks should not depend on persuasive language inside a prompt. The more critical the boundary, the less probabilistic its enforcement should be.
Design failure paths first
Most demos show the happy path. Production systems are defined by what happens when a tool times out, data is missing, a user request conflicts with policy or the model is uncertain.
A reliable agent needs to know when to stop, ask, retry, escalate or roll back.
Observability without theater
Logs should reveal the inputs, tool calls, rule versions, checks and final state needed to understand an outcome. Recording every token is not the same as creating useful observability.
Human control
Human review should be located at decision boundaries, not added indiscriminately to every step. Too much review destroys the value of automation; too little review hides unacceptable risk.
The objective is not autonomous behavior at any cost. It is appropriate autonomy inside designed boundaries.
A reliable agent is not a brilliant model left alone. It is a governed system in which model capability, deterministic infrastructure and human judgment each do the work they are best suited to do.
